I guess all of us remember the fear of going to the dentist as a child.  I know my heart would start to beat fast when he fired up that buzzing drill and told me to open wide. I remember sitting in a dentist chair like the one below in Dr. Haynes DDS office in the Ardmoreite Building back in the 60s.  Looks like something an alien from outer space would use on humans. lol

April 1932
Charles L Cummings, constable at Lone Grove and a pioneer resident of that community, has been subjected to considerable embarrassment by the similarity of his name and that of a man arrested recently for a felony. Cummings has served as constable for 8 years and is widely and favorably known over the county. He wishes his friends to know that he and the man of similar name cited in the account of the arrest are entirely different individuals.

April 1963

For over a month now the utility PrivaZer has been doing a good job removing junk files, etc., from my PC. I did a comparison between my old favorite CCleaner and the new program PrivaZer. I ran CCleaner first, and then PrivaZer immediately afterwards, and PrivaZer did find junk left behind from CCleaner.

http://www.oklahomahistory.net/ttphotos16a/CCleanerVsPrivaZer051816.jpg

I even ran PrivaZer on my little Asus Laptop with had a small Solid State Hard Drive in it, and it worked fine.

You can find current gas prices for a particular Oklahoma town by entering the name or zip code in the GasBuddy search box.

Temps sure have cooled the past few days, but you know the hot summer temps will be back. And you know what that means, A/C running and higher electric bills. 60% or more of your electric bill can be attributed to the air conditioner running day and night to keep your house cool. The Okie Power Saver is a great way to reduce that electric bill and save money year round. Plus it's a full house surge protector and with Spring storms here, it's important to do every thing you can to protect your electrical equipment.

Q.  There is only one place in the U.S. where you'll find iodine. Where in Oklahoma?
A.   "Butch, I believe the place you have in mind is the Anadarko basin where Iodine is extracted from brine. And I think Iodine is contained in much oil and gas field brine. Iodine is also present in ocean water. So there are abundant places in the US where Iodine can be found. Iodine is not extracted from ocean water simple because it is abundant in brine. There are many places to find Iodine, but most are not used because it is so prevalent in the brine and also caliche in Chile. Most Iodine in the US does come from the Anadarko basin." -Larry

Q.  Where in Oklahoma is the oldest documented school house from Oklahoma Territory days located?
A.  (answer in next week's T&T)

From This and That newsletter archives of May 25, 2002:

A few weeks ago I received an email from a Reader inquiring about how some certain streets in the north part of town got their name. They were Cason, Turner, and Freeman streets. These streets are just off North Washington to the east in the Hillcrest Addition. This week when I was at the Military Museum inside the Greater Southwest Historical Museum, I found the answer to the question. The streets were named after Ardmoreites who served in WWII.
----------------------------------------------------
Speaking of the Military Museum, last November most of you will remember the current Carter County Sheriff, Harvey Burkhart, put on loan to the Military Museum a Thompson machinegun for display. The machinegun was purchased by the department in 1960 and had been in their vault for years.
http://www.OklahomaHistory.net/ttphotos/thomp01.jpg
----------------------------------------------------
One little unknown fact about the machinegun, is that on the side of the machinegun, next to the serial number, is some small dimples or dings. These dings represent the number of times the machinegun has been to the factory/armory for reconditioning, modification or whatever. The machinegun on display at the Military Museum here in Ardmore has 7 dings in its side.

There is an old mailbox in the Colston building's lobby by the elevators. I would assume the mailbox is as old as the building itself, 1917. And this mailbox is a collector box for mail dropped through a chute from the upper floors of the building. The chute runs all the way down to the first floor mailbox. So tenants on the upper floors of the building, just walk over to the south wall by the elevator, place their letters in the maildrop, and the letters drop all the way down a chute to the first floor mailbox. Each day the downtown letter carrier picks up mail from the first floor box. Anyway, yes, sometimes I walk over to the Colston Building to mail a letter, there is just something about dropping that letter in this old mailbox this is almost as old as Ardmore.

"Butch, Anyone looking for their Indian Heritage can go to go to the link below and  click on Native American Data and put in a surname and use any tribe and they will get the Dawes commission rolls from National Archives Fort Worth TX. I did this and found my Father Grandfather and great Grandfather all listed as Choctaw Indians."

"Dear Butch -- I fell behind on the newsletters recently, but just discovered your article on the Randol Hotel with pictures of the memorial. I find this very interesting, but you might want to include my late husband, Charles R. Milner (Bob) in the list of your family members. Bob was the grandson of R. L. Randol and the son of Charles A. Milner. He was a lifelong citizen of Ardmore and Senior Trust Officer at First National Bank before his retirement in 1992. He remembered his grandfather Randol well, and we heard many stories of the hotel days (I still have a copy of one of the menus from the dining room) Just thought you might be interested." -Sue Milner

Some mail from this week's MAILBAG.....

"I'm a little behind, having just finished the T&T from 2 weeks ago where you talked about using Windows 10. I have heard good things about it, but-- at my place of work, my computer is also a server for our other computers, so is critical to be operating correctly. When I came to work 5:30 a.m., there it was, having downloaded Windows 10 without asking on a business server. When I clicked through the resulting permission windows, my computer went haywire, got into a loop, and the power unit burned out. It has shut our business down for the whole weekend, as we can't get the tech service and repair we need. Seems like it should be illegal for Microsoft to do this without permission. I'll stick with my Apple computers that I've had at home and in past jobs for 30 years. Never had one virus or malfunction with them in all that time. Almost daily problems with Windows." -Skip J

"Butch the rock house was located on the east side of Lake Murray. The area is now known as rock tower. The building burned years ago. The only thing left beside the terraces is the rock tower visible in the background of your photo."  -s. maxwell

Rock Tower from November 20, 2004 issue.
http://www.oklahomahistory.net/ttphotos3b/lmurrayrockhouse.jpg

From November 4, 2010 issue
It is reported that the Rock House located on the east side of Lake Murray, an administration office at the time, was also bombed by a B-17 from Ardmore. Unfortunately, Lake Murray officials of that time period are no longer with us and the incident has not been verified. Maybe someone reading this will be able to contribute information.

"Butch, Enclosed are additional photos of the Rock Tower located behind the rock house. I don't know what the numbers are on the round "dial" that is in all three photos. The tower is the one at the Rock Tower campground. It seems that I have heard the campground area referred to as "the ranger station". -Jay Roberts

"Dear Butch, Enjoying every issue and going back to older posts. Very nice site and great search engine.  I was born in Marietta 1937 and moved to Ardmore about 1948. Graduated Ardmore High School 1955 (and attended most 10 year reunions). Received commission as US Navy Ensign from University of Oklahoma in February 1960. Active duty till 1966, then reserves until 1992. As a retired naval officer and amateur historian, enjoyed your question about the USS Batfish.

The statement "making it the most successful killing submarine ever" must be qualified because successes were measured by gross tonnage sunk, number of ships sunk, number of combatants sunk, etc.

I spent 32 years active and reserve duty as a naval intelligence officer, fulfilling a wish which started in Ardmore. Perhaps your readers will enjoy my article

I had the pleasure of working for RADM Fluckey when he was the Director, Naval Intelligence, in Washington and later had extensive interviews with him to prepare the article. Note he is included in the list of top 10 above.

Now living in Austria with wonderful Austrian wife after working for the Navy, Drug Enforcement Administration and United Nations, International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna.

As we say in the navy Bravo Zulu to your posts.
