The new year brings to me good memories and looking forward to what's to come in 2020. But it also brings me sadness and memories of what is no longer. I think back over the last 12 months and those in our T&T family who did not finished 2019 with us. Some were friends as far back as I can remember, now they are only memories. But over the years they made their memories and contributions to this newsletter, and for that I am thankful. Their memories are recorded in back issues, that would otherwise died with them. Kind of like when someone asks me how I deal with those 15,000+ calls I made when working for the ambulance service. I tell them I just don't dwell on those bad calls, and some were really bad. I try to think about the good calls, and the people I helped during those 15 years. I really miss some of my T&T family and how I depended on them for historical contributions and the stories they shared. But they have passed on and we must move on into 2020. I'm reminded of a little song I heard back in the 1960s.
Here the dearest of ties we must sever,
Tears of sorrow are seen ev'ry day,
But no sickness, no sighing forever,
When we've gone the last mile of the way.I learned something new this week, a place called Burning Mountain in Murray county. It is located south of Davis, Oklahoma.

This is a photo of the old D&H Auto Salvage on Refinery Road from years ago. I been there many times as a teenager to find a part for my cars and trucks. One thing that amazed me is the "squak box" they had for located parts from other dealers. The owner would press the Talk Button and say, "Ardmore looking for a gas tank for a 72 VW. In a minutes someone would answer, "Duncan here, I think I have one." Today D&H Auto is just an empty field.

A reader sent in a photo of a plaque at the old Jimi Brady Rose homeplace on north Highway 77.
This house was built by J.J. "Jim" Eaves on his ranch at Pooleville, Oklahoma in 1913.
It was cut in three pieces and moved 28 Miles to Brady Ranch in 1947 by his daughter
Mamie Eaves Brady and husband J. Roy. The den with fireplace was added at this time.
Native Rock for the fireplace was gathered from the Pooleville Ranch that was established
in 1892 Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. The house was again cut and moved to this present sight on May 8, 1959 then
US Highway 77 was made four lane. The fireplace was moved intact with den to this site.
Restoration was done in 1981 by 3rd generation owner Mrs. Jimmy Brady Rose.

I have a brand new, never been opened, of the same book I would swap for a used edition with someone. If you have a used edition and want to trade, let me know.

"Happy New Year Cuz and Mrs. Cuz, Really enjoyed the pictures of downtown Ardmore all lit up for Christmas. Brought back a lot of memories of my pre-teen years when we would drive down from Davis just to see all the window displays that were up for Christmas. I do believe back then that Daube's had the best displays of all as they were the ones with the moving animation characters that all us kids loved to stand and watch for hours." -Poss in Korea

"Butch, I lived at 707 K St. NW from about 1946 until 1954. The store I remember was at the NE corner of K Street and 8th. I do not know the names of the people who owned it. I have a cute story about that store and the different times back then. At about age 5 or so I decided to take some change from my mother’s purse and go over to the store for a treat. I believe I bought a pop and a candy bar. By the time I got home my mother was waiting for me. The people at the store knew I shouldn’t have had that much money and that I wasn’t allowed to cross the street without permission. They called my mother to let her know I was buying candy and pop. I got to cut my own willow switch from the tree out back. I learned several good lessons that day." -Carrol Evans

My grandfather, Clint Byrne, & family lived in Berwyn, OK & owned a grocery store there until about 1922. I believe the store was on their property which might have been in the country, not IN Berwyn, because my mother said that she & her brother were would give Grandpa's order for store supplies to the traveling salesman when Grandpa was getting other supplies "in town". Sometimes they would order their favorite candies that were not on his list, then get into trouble when Grandpa found out! Does anyone know where that store was located in Berwyn, the name of it, or anything about the Byrne Family there? Butch, you once ask if someone knew who the " Byrne" was printed in big letters on the side of an old building in Ardmore. Did that question ever get answered? Thank you. Enjoy reading T & T, as my mother, Fay Byrne was born in Ardmore in 1912. -Carol Helmick
From my September 2001 newsletter:
Here's another red brick building my grandfather, Stanley Carmon built, the old Mac's Wholesale Building at 126 "A" NE. I helped unload tons of plywood and sheetrock in the far south end of this building (middle of the block) back in the 1960s. My grandfather used it for storage for his lumber yard. At the top of the building it reads, "BYRNE 1913".

During the early 1880s the Marlow family settled in Indian Territory in the present-day southwestern town of Marlow, located just 15 minutes north of Duncan. The father, Dr. Williamson Marlow treated the sick and injured in the area, while his second wife Martha Jane ran the household. Their five sons, George, Charlie, Alfred, Boone and Lewellyn, made a living farming and doing the occasional odd job. It wasn’t long after Dr. Marlow’s death that the Marlow family experienced a series of dramatic and fatal events.

As regards to the Cude Station photo at 718 South Commerce, first man far left in suit and topcoat, appears to me as Hy Johnson; the 4th man from left in white coveralls is Clayton Cude, beside the Shack's Drug panel truck, the man in white coveralls and western hat could be Clayton Cude's brother. The 3 men dressed in suits etc probably would be the drivers of the vehicles being serviced and of course those in the white coveralls are the station attendants. Perhaps you can put some light on the Shack's Drug truck if you have access to a city directory of that time...I don't remember a drugstore by that name. Regards and Have a Happy New Year. -Steve Douglas
