Jill and I are doing great on our Paleo Diet (caveman diet).  Been almost 2 weeks now, and we are strictly following the diet. Today my BP is down to 142/85, not perfect but so much better than that 172/89 a couple weeks ago. Down 9 pounds to 184 as of today.  Feel so much better.

In the past week my list of vicious dog attacks in Oklahoma has grown with leaps and bounds. Some evenings I'd add a dozen or more attacks just within Oklahoma.

Oklahoma History Revisited by Larry Guthrie, Sulphur

Question:  How was Oklahoma settled?

Answer:  T1540 - Spanish explorer, Spanish Hernando de Soto (1500-1542) explores the area in search of gold.

1719 - French Explorer, Soldier and Trader Jean Baptiste Bernard de La Harpe (1683 - 1765) explores Oklahoma

1719 - French Explorer, Soldier and Trader Jean Baptiste Bernard de La Harpe (1683 - 1765) explores Oklahoma

1775 - 1783 - The American Revolution creates the United States of America. The Revolution was due to the British burden of taxes and total power to legislate any laws governing the American colonies

July 4, 1776 - United States Declaration of Independence

July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain and makes an alliance with the American revolutionary forces

September 3, 1783 - The Treaty of Paris is signed by the victorious United States and the defeated Great Britain

1756 - 1763 - The Seven Years War (French and Indian War) due to disputes over land is won by Great Britain. France gives England all French territory east of the Mississippi River, except New Orleans. The Spanish give up east and west Florida to the English in return for
Cuba

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado first explored the region for Spain in 1541. The U.S. acquired most of Oklahoma in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase from France. The Western Panhandle region became U.S. territory with the annexation of Texas in 1845.

Set aside as Indian Territory in 1834, the region was divided into Indian Territory and Oklahoma territory on May 2, 1890. The two were combined to make a new state, Oklahoma, on Nov. 16, 1907.

On April 22, 1889 the official population of Oklahoma Territory went from 0 to 50,000 souls. Undoubtedly the biggest one day population gain for an area in the history of mankind!

From This and That newsletter archives of November 7, 1998:

This week a pleasant surprise arrived by the U.S. Mail! It was an envelope with two photos in it..... of this bell located on Hwy 23 at the north edge of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I was in Eureka Springs in the early 70s, but sure didn't notice this bell. The thing that sticks out in my mind about Eureka Springs was I tried to sleep that night in a Volkswagen Beetle, and I swore I'd never try that again! I hurt all over the next morning. The dumb things we do when young and mindless. Anyway, the friend that sent these was in Eureka Springs on vacation.

My friend Ronnie Roberts loaned me his photo of the 1973 Dillinger movie in which parts of it were filmed in the courthouse rotunda here in Ardmore. Melvin Purvis was cool sitting there on the shoeshine stand, talking to one of our local kids.... David Bacon, son of Ray Bacon at the First National Bank here in Ardmore. David didn't want to be a G-man. Ronnie was also in the movie along with Wayne Warthen, Ray Bacon, James Clark, and several other local townspeople. Of course the stars of Dillinger were Warren Oates and Cloris Leachman.

Jimmie McDaniel has a great pic. It's the old train depot in Mannsville, Oklahoma. Mannsville is 15 miles east of Ardmore.

A couple months ago I noticed my neighbor's old dog had these great big rough looking calluses behind her "elbows" and "knees". These were very rough and large, about the size of a silver dollar. So I did some searching on the Net and found several websites on canine care and they said to give the dog Shark Liver Oil if he has any kind of hair and skin problems. Not only did she have those calluses, but a lot of her hair was gone and thin. Plus she had no energy whatsoever. So I started pricking a couple of Shark Liver Oil capsules and squeezing them out on some dog food for her. Now two months later, it is like a miracle! The calluses are completely gone, and hair has grown back where the rough spots were. Her coat has grown back thick, black and shiny. And she will run all the way from her yard to mine, which she hasn't done in several years. Amazing what something so simple as Shark Liver Oil can do.

Last Thursday I went to our annual Ducks Unlimited Banquet at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum here in Ardmore. I will have to say, its one of the fun events I go to. Lots of drawings..... and the kids all win something! It's great to see the smiles on all the youngins. My friend even won the grand door prize...... a 12 gauge Bennelli Shotgun valued at $1,145. Wow! But the fun thing was when we got out of his (his wife's) car to go into the coliseum where the banquet was being held, he decided to put the emergency brake on. We couldn't figure out how to take it off..... I got my cell phone out of my back pocket, called his wife, she said... "the emergency brake is not on that I know of" hahaha and that she has never pushed the emergency brake on... so she had no idea how to release it. Anyway, after 20 minutes, he decided to get the manual out of the glove compartment... finally it said to "depress the emergency brake pedal a second time to release it" hahahahaha I got to talk with a lot of friends I haven't seen in months..... it was really a fun evening. I would recommend the Ducks Unlimited Banquet to anyone! http://www.ducks.org/ Local caterer D. Allen Wint was there catering us all to his BBQ! Plus someone brought Mountain Oysters again this year. I ate some, they weren't too bad.. but it takes some psyching out to eat them.

"I really enjoyed this week's newsletter. Thanks for consistently bringing us such great memories and information that is so wonderful. Loved the stories about Emet. While I was at First Methodist in the 50's- early 60's, I think that Geraldine Rawlins was the Music Director and Ruth Milner was the Organist. Ruth and her sister Ruby Krueger were cousins of my mother. My sister and I took weekly piano lessons from Ruby and Ruth used to let me play around on the organ occasionally. Lila Stout sounds familiar but I don't remember when she was there. Loved the conversation about the Kraft cheeses. We never had a family holiday dinner without a relish tray and celery stuffed with Kraft cheese, usually the Olive Pimento or the Pineapple, was always on the tray. Whenever I pull out the green glass plate that was used for the relishes, I immediately think of celery filled with Kraft cheese spread." -Nancy Coffman Wilson
"The C-47 was basically the same as the DC-3 and after the war many of them were sold and converted to civilian configurations where the DC-3s for a number of years continued to be workhorses on commercial airlines. My first flight was on a DC-3 on the old Central Airlines going from Amon Carter Field (between Dallas and Fort Worth before DFW) to Enid. We got as far as Oklahoma City and the pilot said the engine was running a little rough and he wouldn't go on. He said he was not long out of the air corps/air force and if it had been in the military he would have gone on without thinking any more about it, but he thought about all those passengers back in the plane and wouldn't try it." -Wes Leatherock

The C-47 was just like the DC-3 without seats. All the airlines were currently using the DC-3 for short hops. The C-47 was used by the military to haul military equipment. Does anyone know if the Douglas aircraft plant mentioned in last week's T&T is where the air force base at Tinker is now?

"My parents acquired Camp La Grande back in the early 50's from David Shellenberger. Not sure the circumstances, but at that time my father was a Bootlegger along with Dan Alexander. Dan on the South Side of Myall and my father on the North side.  I am trying to locate photos of the old place. I can barely remember it. Being put up on the counter when I was little. Climbing the Mullberry trees and even on top of one of the old buildings.  He also had a car lot the name LaGrande. Any photo locations would be greatly appreciated. All the family has passed except my children and myself so I am trying to gather as much data, photos and items as possible, before I pass. I hate for all the information on the family to be lost."
