Fred Hamner at one time was a sheriff in Seminole, Oklahoma and later a jailer in Wewoka, but went to the other side in 1932.  He and others robbed a bank just over in the next county, Johnston County, at Millcreek, Oklahoma. Hamner would lose his life that day in the resulting shootout in front of the bank. Their car drove up to the bank about 2:30. Two men got out of the car while the third waited, and then came into the bank. Walking in, the two drew their pistols and walked behind the teller's window, demanding Charley Penner, cashier and Mrs. Dye, bookkeeper to lie down on the floor, while Hamner put all the money in a black handbag. The bank officials were then told to go with them, but Penner jumped into the vault, pulling Mrs. Dye after him, and slammed the door. One of the bandits shot at Penner, the bullet striking the door about an inch from the edge. Penner then turned on the bank alarm. The dead man was identified as Fred Hamner, Wewoka. the wounded men are brothers, named Smalley and lived at Sulphur, formerly living at Wewoka. The robbers were driving a 1932 Chevrolet coupe.

If you want to lose some weight and feel better too; think about trying a TruVision 7 day trial pack. I'm below 180 pounds now in only 5 weeks and a lot of my gut is gone. That is where I wanted to see it work the most, in the stomach fat. I reached my BMI even though I am at the higher end of the chart. My energy level is way up and my desire to eat all the time is way down. TruVision has really suppressed my appetite. I have Trial Packs ($20) in stock now if anyone wants to try it. It's been like a miracle for me and it can for you too. Check it all out at the link below.

It's been 2 or 3 years at least since I last looked at the visitor stats on my oklahomahistory.net administration page. I was really amazed how many Hits my website gets since the last time i check. In January it received over 37,000 hits and 25,000 of those were unique visitors. Wow! If that guy calls me again wanting to buy my website, I'll ask him if he'll pay $1.00 for each unique visitor. I think $25,000 is a good round figure.  lol

If anyone has been saving my newsletters through the years I am looking for Issue 573 dated January 24, 2008. Somehow, when I don't know, #573 was overwritten with a partial #573. If someone has it, even a paper copy in a binder, let me know.

From This and That newsletter archives of February 20, 1999:

About six miles south of Wilson, Oklahoma on Highway 76.... in southwestern Carter county is the community of Post Oak. It no longer exist on the maps. There used to be a school there years ago. The Post Oak school house bell has been mounted there, at the Carter county, Love county line. Here are a couple of pics I took some time back of the bell and memorial stone.

"This is an old photo of the Colcord building in Oklahoma City. Boy, do I remember that building, I had just turned eighteen and Uncle Sam gave me my first, free bus ride to see it."  -Butch

Here's a pic of a nice bell at the Byars, Oklahoma Baptist Church (18 miles NE of Pauls Valley.) The little town of Byars used to have a lot of businesses on both sides of Highway 59. Now just mostly empty, run down buildings.

There is a new publication in Oklahoma called County Works. It's dedicated to county government in Oklahoma. The first issue, January 1999, featured Carter County District 2 and the bridge building progress made by Commissioner Kevin Robinson since 1991.

The shooting involved a Dr. Merritt and her grandfather appeared in court as a witness to the shooting. Her father is 91 and never changes his story. If you are unable to help me, could you perhaps direct me to someone who can?

Just in case, this is the other individuals,

"Did you know that recorded history for the name "Oklahoma" began with Spanish explorer Coronado in 1541 on his quest for the "Lost City of Gold." That makes it a little hard for it to be a Choctaw Indian name! A lot of folks including Choctaws have said often that Okla and homa aren't Choctaw or derived from Choctaw so nothing new, but I was curious as to when it was first named. Maybe someone out there can enlighten us."
Q. Butch - ya got any links on Oklahomahistory or ya know of any others regarding that Woodford station?

A. Yes I do!

"Butch, By chance do you have any pictures of Marietta Oklahoma from the 1950's? I'm putting a book together for my kids and need pictures of Marietta during the 50's. I lived just a block off Main so I pretty much grew up on Main Street. I remember dragging home AC boxes and water heater boxes from one of the furniture stores and made play houses where I spent hours in the heat of summer playing in them. LOL The Internet gives me more pictures of Marietta, OH and other Marietta's than my Marietta, Oklahoma. Thanks."  -Annette Nickles  taartn@yahoo.com
"This weekend I found what might be the worlds most unique car (one of a kind for sure) at Womack's 4 Corners Trading Post at the intersection of Hwys 177 & 105, about 23 miles straight east of Guthrie, Oklahoma. It's a "Stutebird," specially created from the front and back of a Stutebaker and mid-section of a Ford Thunderbird. It's for sale and would make you the envy of the neighborhood."  -C. Dwane Stevens
