Russett, Oklahoma

Annie Laura Goff and Arthur Edgar Brown (my parents)

By Mona Jo (Brown) Cumbie

Annie Laura Goff was born in Woodville, Oklahoma on August 3, 1912 and on November 16, 1929 she married Arthur Edgar Brown who was born in McMillian, Indian Territory on May 19, 1904, to James Andrew Brown and Annie Collins Brown.

They lived in the Brownsville, Oklahoma community until 1941 when Lake Texoma was built taking all the land and residences. While they lived in Brownsville three daughters were born: Neva Lafon on March 4, 1931, Mona Jo on July 28, 1935 and Glynda Jane on August 6, 1940.

When they left Brownsville they moved to a little community SW of Madill called Oklahoma, there on February 22, 1943 Susan Kaye was born. They were afraid they were going to lose their land there, so they sold out and bought a little house in Oakland, we lived there until February of 1949, and moved to Russett. The four girls started to school and then on July 12, 1949, the pride and joy of the family Arthur Edgar Jr. (Eddie) was born, needless to say we spoiled him good (or bad), but he turned out okay. The next child was a boy named Tommy Lee born February 9, 1951, and the baby Nancy Lou born July 24, 1952.

We lived in the first house south of Russett on Pettijohn Road, and farmed the land across the road, raising cotton, corn and peanuts, which was shared with Mr. Chapman. We also had a big watermelon patch that was a temptation for some of the boys from school. We older girls worked in the fields and also had our chores to do in the house, it was my job to get up every morning and cook breakfast for the family. I guess that is why I like to cook today.

I was in the eighth grade and there was this cute boy in the seventh grade that was a pretty good athlete, we went to ball games and ran around with Codeen Looney and Wayne Easterwood a lot.

I graduated from Russett high school in 1953 and went to Nebraska to get a job, but it was too cold to stay up there, although when Jack graduated from high school we married June 19, 1954 & moved to Nebraska.

Our oldest son Randy Michael was born in Nebraska April 29, 1956. We stayed in Nebraska until March 1957, and moved back to Madill.

My Granny Goff had gone to California and we lived in her house in Madill and Jack worked at Lake Texoma Lodge. Our second son Dennis Wayne came with one of those tornados on April 25, 1957, I spent the biggest portion of that spring in the cellar with those two babies. We lived in Madill until 1958 when Fraley Lumber Company transferred Jack to Marietta where we stayed until December 1959 and they transferred him to Ardmore.

Our third son Jackie Don was born June 20, 1961 in Ardmore. We built a house at Russett on Granny and Pa Cumbie’s old home place and moved in April 1984.

Neva Lafon married Emit Clark from Chickasha. (They both passed away this year 8/30 & 10/23)

Mona Jo married Jack Cumbie from Russett.

Glynda Jane married Ferrell Herndon of Kingston, he passed away in 2003.

Susan Kaye married Jackie Pilgrim they live between Madill and Ardmore.

Eddie married Deborah Stephens from Madill, they are divorced, he resides in Atoka.

Tommy Lee married Vickie Allison from Madill, they live in Madill.

Nancy Lou is married to Doug Kirk, they live in Ardmore.

All three of our sons graduated from Ardmore High School, Randy attended school at SOSU, Dennis attended school at OU and Jackie attended Eastern Junior College at Wilburton and got a Master’s degree at SOSU. I guess Jackie liked Wilburton because he is Athletic Director/Teacher/Baseball coach at Wilburton High School.

Randy works for Michelin in Ardmore, he has a daughter, Alyssa and a son Jeremy. Dennis works for R.D. Williams Co in Ardmore, he and Tracy have a son Will, Jackie and Cindy have a daughter Kacyn, a son Colton and a son Carter.

I guess drinking from the Well makes you come back for more, we moved back in 1984.
