Luke Smith and Lula Stafford 1921
Joseph Luther (Luke) Smith was born 23 Oct 1901 in Navarro County, TX. His parents were Simeon and Carrie Elizabeth (Hughes) Smith both from Alabama. The family moved to Hewitt in Carter County in late 1910. He married Lula Stafford 4 Oct 1921 in Ardmore. Lula was born 29 Nov 1903 in Henderson County, TX. Her parents were Luther Stafford born in North Carolina and Nancy Elizabeth (Betty) LaRue Stafford from Tennessee. The Staffords came to Grady, Jefferson County Oklahoma about 1908. The Smiths moved to Russett from Deece in Carter County in January 1938. When the Smiths first moved to Russett they farmed, then Luke went to work for Mr. Chapman as crew leader and the boys did the farming for the Smiths. In 1954 due to Luke’s poor health they sold the farm and moved to Ravia. Luke died in 1980 at Tishomingo hospital and Lula died 1994 at the Madill hospital. Both are buried at Ravia
CHILDREN OF LUKE AND LULA SMITH Joseph Daniel (J D) Garner was the son of Luke’s sister Cora Palestine Smith and her husband, Jim Garner. They were both dead by early 1930 so J D came to live with Luke and Lula. He was born 8 Jun 1922 and died 7 Nov 1943 in Italy, while serving his country in the army.
Doris Elizabeth was born 29 Jul 1922. Doris married Edward Odell Burke son of Jodie and Myrtle (Sparks) Burke. Ed died 8 Mar 1995. Doris lives in a health care facility in Scottsdale, AZ. They have three children, Delbert, Eva and Anita who all live in Arizona.
Joseph Luther, JR (Joe) was born 15 Jan 1924. Joe married Betty Doris Simpson from Morris, OK. Joe is retired from General Motors and they live in Fort Worth, TX. They have a daughter, Denise who lives in Fort Worth and a son, Don is deceased.
Hershal Adolphus was born 4 Mar 1925. He married Leta Lois Duke, daughter of Ollie and Myrtle (Armstrong) Duke. Hershal is retired from Hooper Pipe Company. They live in Mesa, AZ. Have a son, Chuck in Mesa and a daughter, Carol in Texas.
Billy Charles was born 27 Apr 1927. He married Letitia Colbert from Mannsville. Bill is retired from Tinker Air Force Base as a civilian employee. They live on Lake Texoma near Kingston, OK. Have two sons, Charles and Stephen who both live in Oklahoma City.
Alma Lois was born 1 Sep 1929. She married Curtis Leon May, son of Carmon and Mary (Gill) May. Curtis died 28 Apr 1974, due to an accident while being a volunteer fireman at Tishomingo. Alma is retired from owning an assisted living home for elderly. She lives in Tishomingo. Their children are Mary of Oregon, Marilyn of Texas, Jimmy of Ardmore and Kenny is now deceased.
Ora Mae was born 19 Dec 1933. She is married to Herman Wesley Watkins. Ora Mae did child care in her home for several years, but is now retired. They live south of Dickson in Carter County. Wes has a son, Buddy and a daughter, Shelly both live in Carter County.
Eva Pearl was born 4 Sep 1937. She married Don Lee Norton from Ravia. They were divorced before he died in 1986. Eva lives in Leveen, AZ. She is retired from the State of Arizona Animal Control Department, however still works for them part time. She also raises meat goats. She has a daughter Kim, who lives in Dallas and her son, Don is deceased
As of May 2007 all seven of the Smith brothers and sisters are still living.
