The Cumbie Family

Charles Henry Cumbie born March 10, 1869 in Cartersville, Georgia married Fannie Bell Pierce in Gainesville, TX in 1893. His parents were Hiram & Francis Cumbie. Charlie and Fannie moved from Tioga, TX in 1900 to Indian Territory before Oklahoma was a state, it is not known exactly where they lived, but in 1903 they lived on an Indian man's place, his name was Watson Ned. They lived there until 1903 at which time they moved to Russett. He was a farmer and raised cattle. He was very active in the Baptist Church, he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was better known as "Uncle Charlie" to his wide circle of friends. He died at his home in Russett in 1952 at the age of 82. His wife Fannie died at Ada in a nursing center at the age of 90 yrs in 1965.

They were the parents of 6 children, Amanda, Ocie, Ola, Jack, Roland and Ralph, out of the six only two remained in Russett, Roland and Ralph. Ralph died at the family home in 1968, there was a propane explosion and he was burned to death.

Roland David Cumbie was born February 3, 1903 in Indian Territory, He moved to Russett in 1913 with his parents. He attended the Russett school. On December 22, 1930 he married Geraldine Melissa Brown. she attended school in Mannsville and Madill. As a young man Roland worked in the oil fields near Wilson and Healdton, OK. He also worked in the harvest fields in Kansas for a while. He returned home to Russett and was employed with the Russett school system as school bus driver and as a custodian. He also helped his pa with the farming. In about 1936 Roland and his Pa bought 60 acres of land in the Russett community. Roland built a house on this land, he worked very hard clearing timber and brush. He did some farming but mostly raised cattle. He later bought more land that adjoined his 60 acres.

Geraldine went to work at the Johnston Memorial hospital in 1960 as nurse aide and ward clerk. She retired in 1974. They lived on this place until his death on May 28, 1978, Geraldine remained on the place until 1988 when she moved on her son Jack's place to be near him and Mona Jo. Geraldine passed away July 8, 2002 in the nursing home at Madill at the age of 90.

Roland & Geraldine had 3 children, Jack Edwin born July 7, 1936, Virginia Kay born March 26, 1942 and Terry David born April 8, 1944.

Jack married Mona Jo Brown they live at Russett.

Virginia married David Gregory, she lives in Arlington, TX.

Terry married Diana Maxwell, they live in Plano, TX.
