I received an interesting email this week listing all the deputies under U.S. Marshal J. S. Hammer. I recognize several of the names including one time Carter county sheriff Buck Garrett.  John Hammer is the U.S. Marshal who commissioned Allen “Gus” Bobbitt as a Deputy U.S. Marshal.  As you will remember, Bobbitt was shot by Jesse West, 1 of the 4 hanged in Ada, Oklahoma in 1909.  All the officers assembled in Ardmore to greet the newly appointed U.S. Deputy Marshal, Ben Colbert. The Daily Ardmoreite – January 30, 1902 The Whole Force Present
Today, every deputy marshal under U. S. marshal J. S. HAMMER is here, waiting to see BEN H. COLBERT, new appointed marshal, and all the office deputies except J. A. TUCKER of Chickasha and W. G. BROWN of Ryan are present.

Another history lesson by Betty Carroll:

“Once Upon A Time…. in 1898 a small group of Nuns traveled to Ardmore to take charge of a newly erected boarding school and were welcomed by the townspeople. The five Sisters of Mercy who traveled from Sacred Heart, which was located in Shawnee, Oklahoma, traveled over rough terrain in covered wagons, which were known as prairie schooners at that time. When they arrived in Ardmore they found a 2 1/2 story school structure known as St. Agnes Catholic Academy which had been erected by the Right Rev. Bishop Meerschaert, first bishop to Oklahoma. Mother Katharine Drexel, founder of the Congregation of the Most Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Blacks, had assisted in securing the necessary funds for promotion of the school. When the federal contract expired in 1932, government support was withdrawn and enrollment decreased. The school existed as a private organization and served the parish as a parochial school for many years.”  -Recorded by Betty Carroll March 15, 1989

Last week I forgot to include a link to the pic of the bottle and a typo in his email address, so here it is again:  Caleb Hacker came by this week with an unusual item he came across northwest of Ardmore. An old bottle of some kind, with the words Ace of Drinks, but seems no one knows who made these type of bottles.  Caleb thinks it was manufactured/sold in the Ardmore area. Maybe  a T&T Reader recognizes this unusual bottle??? Caleb’s email address ishackersmacks123@gmail.com  or 580-668-2885

Well, this week Jill and I got into chicken farming faster than we planned thanks to Gary Simmons and his wife.  They gave us 4 Rhode Island Reds, 3 pullets and a rooster, all about 6 to 8 weeks old.  Wednesday after work I had to rush home and finished up a few things on the Hen Hotel so they’d have a safe place to spend the night.  Jill and I got through about 8:30pm Wednesday and ushered the chickens in to their new home. They looked happy, probably never had a five star hotel to sleep in.  I’ll have more on the chickens and their coop next week.

In 1924 there were an estimated 120,000 chickens in Carter county, 50 per
farm. That’s 240 farms. Times have sure changed since 1924.

A couple of months ago I discovered a website that monitors over 200,000 questionable websites worldwide, and keeps those bad guys away.  There are dozens of categories including adware and spyware sites they monitor and stop them in their tracks, before they every pop up on your computer.  The FREE service is called OpenDNS.  Jill and I have had it monitoring our internet at home the past two months with no problem.  It sure is nice to have the peace of mind that OpenDNS protects us from those bad websites.  And an added plus, our internet even speeded up after we started using OpenDNS.  If you have any questions, drop me a line.

“We took this video today at Sulphur, the water is crystal clear and running again after all the rain we got, some of the springs there actually dried up this year.  When I drive thru this place I always call Scheryl and tell her I am in her favorite place in the world and she knows right where I am.  Enjoy the beauty.”

“Hello Butch, I thought I would pass along this website that has some neat free utility programs that you might find useful. I know you like to put such sites in your newsletter from time to time which I have appreciated.” -Jerry Summy http://www.karenware.com

“A few years ago on our farm north of Sulphur, we had a “guinea” pen enclosed with heavy wire. The door was made of plywood. That was a mistake. One night something chewed through the door and killed all the guineas. Most probably it was a bobcat. I hope your hens have better luck. Thanks for all the informative news each week.”  -Iva Lee Quetone

“This is amazing but these honey bees are drinking a quart jar of hummingbird nectar everyday. They are being well fed at the Williams casa.”  -Doug Williams

“Hey Butch, my Mom and I were discussing your new Hen House. I told my Mom that I was gonna have to write ya and tell ya not to forget the nest egg.. we always left an egg with an X marked on it in each nest (to fool the chickens so they would not know you were stealing their eggs). LOL or… my Mom said when she was a little girl people would use an old white doorknob! I thought that was so funny. I guess a nest eggs works because the chickens we had would never lay in a nest unless there was one in there.. yes I was the egg gatherer! P.S. the nest egg was always rotten we did not bother emptying the contents out before we put the X on it.”

“Butch, I don’t know if you knew that Shorty Claxton of Claxton’s Grocery in Healdton was the grandfather of Sherri Buben Coale, The coach of the Oklahoma Sooners women’s basketball team. The store was located 300 block on Sinclair Street. Shorty was also a deputy sherriff after he closed the store. There was also a Hopkins Grocery who sold out to Jim Teel and Hall’s Grocery which was next to the Wacker’s 5 and 10 cent store on main, and John Weatherford’s Fruit Stand that sold out to Freeman Bray on Main Street next to the Nu Show.”  -Perry Pearson

“In Love County, Nathan Banks had a grocery and Post Office at Bellville near the cotton gin. After many years he sold the store and it was continues by Marion Roberson, then Arthur Blankenship, then Jack Blankenship. The Post Office Window and mail boxes are in the Love Co. Historical Museum.” -Gaye in Courtney, Oklahoma
