March 6, 1970 The Wilson Post:  A District Court hearing was in progress this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock in Murray County to see whether or not a court injunction order be granted at the request of Gov. Dewey Bartlett to padlock Turner Falls Park for the weekend. It would be removed Monday noon.  Officers said “Hippies” were gathering at the popular Southern Oklahoma park in defiance of a court injunction order granted last week blocking the Rock Music Festival previously set for August 8 and 9.  It was learned that 300 National Guardsmen from McAlester were at the park, supported by another 100 state patrolmen and 20 crime bureau men.

July 13, 1944 The Daily Ardmoreite:  The first map made of the city of Ardmore was made by W.S. Crockett, who celebrated his 80th birthday anniversary last Thursday. His map was made the official map of the Chickasaw Townsite and it was the first map ever to be made of the city.

A T&T Reader gave me an original negative of Clara Hamon Smith, the infamous lover of Ardmore oil millionaire Jake Hamon back around 1920.  Some of you will remember it was Oklahoma’s “Oil King” Jake Hamon who concocted the scheme to buy Warren Harding the presidency and in return Hamon would be appointed Secretary of the Interior. The scandal would come to be known as “The Teapot Dome”.   I’ve seen several photos of Clara in books and but none with the detailed clarity of this one.  After Clara allegedly shot Jake Hamon (he died a week later in the Hardy Sanitarium), she moved to California, married a movie producer, and they made a movie of the Ardmore incident that rocked the entire U.S. called “Fate”.  I am still trying to get my hands on that 1921 movie.

Doug Williams sent in a photo of Little Niagara at Sulphur last week.  The Little Niagara Falls is located in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area.  Looks like the water is really flowing good, and you can bet its ice cold.

Here is something you won’t see but once in a blue moon.  A 1983 Indian Territory and Carter County Pioneers Book for sale in The Sooner Shopper this week.

I shot this picture at Mt View Mall of all the motorcycle riders assembled in the parking lot for a fund raiser.

After I told about my aching neck and shoulder in the last T&T, a Reader emailed me about a horse liniment called Absorbine.  I bought a bottle of the gel at Orschelen’s in Ardmore for $12 and it works great, putting lots of heat right where I need it!

After over a week of suffering severe pain in my neck and shoulder, along with a numb thumb, I went to chiropractor Dr, Tony Leming here in Lone Grove.  Dr. Leming got right to the root of my problem, several badly out of alignment vertebra in my neck, causing a pinched median nerve (probably from years at the computer).  Short story:  after 2 alignments and 2 treatments with his TENS machine, I’m much improved.  What was interesting to me is my experience with the TENS machine.  Back in 1998 I typed up a webpage on the inventor of the TENS machine.  The TINS machine got its start back around 1930 and was known as the Rife Resonator after its’ inventor, Dr. Royal Raymond Rife, M.D. of San Diego.

My “automatic robot” just keeps amazing me everyday, predicting when to trade the foreign exchange market (using a technique called scalping), increasing profits in leaps and bounds.  No human intervention, or decision making on my part whatsoever. The past couple of weeks:  30 wins, 6 losses, and an increase of over 6 percent.

“Hey Butch,  It takes a brave man to grow old!”

“I heard that the little pills for poison ivy like the old Dr. Boyd prescribed are sold at WalMart.”

“I have just begun my search for some particular history of Ardmore and was led to you through multiple sites on the internet. My grandfather was John Thomas Walker. Many people when I talk to them will quickly say to me that they remember him very well and begin to share their stories. He was an elderly man, very tall and most remembered for selling paper roses around town. He and my grandmother apparently made them. He then walked around town selling them. I am also told that during the 60?s (uncertain of the time, simply guessing based on my father?s age at the time) perhaps, he was the oldest citizen of Ardmore for several years running. Through the honor of his age he was honored several years at Ardmore?s Birthday Celebration activities. What I am in search of is any possible photos of him, in any shape or form. Perhaps newspaper articles or other resources. Of course I will not reject any others that may have stories about him. Thanks in advance.”   -Terry Walker   okemtp@cableone.net

Every time I see you post a google map, I pop open my (garmin) mapsource and compare. Don’t know if you’ve got (yet 😉 ) a gps that you can load maps into but when you do, this site will be a good place to visit:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ and one level down
http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/

Lots of free stuff, including topo maps (24k) of each state. Handy as they show terrain instead of only the roads.

This might also be handy:
http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

and this too:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

The maps are pretty good size (some several hundred megabyte).

“Hey Butch. I hope you have been doing well. I was looking on Oklahoma History and I saw your comment on horny toads. Well I am nearly 31 years old, and I have lived in Lone Grove nearly my whole life. A friend and I used to catch horny toads a lot back in the early to mid 90’s. We would just go out in, what was then kind of a pasture, on the north side of my house, and on the west side of the north part of the EZ Mini Storage, and we would see a lot of horny toads. I guess we mainly did that in about 1993 or 1994. And I would see a horny toad fairly often over the years on the lot on the west side of my house (on the east side of the building where Trisha’s Day Care is now.  I have a picture of my mom holding a horny toad I caught there in 1994 or 1995. I haven’t seen any horny toads in years, but the landscape and everything here sure has changed in the last 10 to 15 years. I just wanted to share this with you.” -Roy Snelson

“Hi, Butch,  I wasn’t too sure who to ask this, but considering that I saw more of these purple trees in Texas & Oklahoma over the Easter holiday, that someone might know.”  -Kathi

A Change is Gonna Come –Sam Cooke 1931-1964

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I’ve been running ever since
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
Cause I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown somebody keep telling me don’t hang around
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knockin’ me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh…..

There been times that I thought I couldn’t last for long
But now I think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will
