Back in the 1960s and 1970s I remember a sign on the south side of Highway 70 between Lone Grove and Wilson (at Cottonwood Creek) that read: Oklahoma Coon Hunters Association. I haven’t seen that sign in years, until last Sunday afternoon.  I was traveling south on Midway Road, south of Highway 70, and there it was, like dejavu (1/2 mi south of Bronco Rd). This is the exact GPS reading: 34.121984, -97.387340 and address: 1195 Midway Road, Wilson, Oklahoma. The association was established in 1958 by a Wesley “Doc” Webber, Jim Hefley, and a Vernon Watterson. The sign in front of the building reads: 1952.

I was really saddened last Monday when I saw in The Ardmoreite obits the name Ann Copeland.  Ann worked many years at the cemetery office at Rose Hill Cemetery, here in Ardmore. I can not tell you how many times she helped me when researching names and burial info at the cemetery. Sometimes I’d go in person, and other times I’d call and she help me find info on someone buried at the cemetery. Sometimes she’d get in her car and drive to some spot in the cemetery, write down the info I needed, then call me when she returned to the office. Rest in peace Ann Copeland. I will miss you.

On January 31st a retirement reception will be held for Carter County Commissioner Bill McLaughlin (District 1). It will be a come and go event that Thursday afternoon in the Annex Building next door to the courthouse in Ardmore.  I’m sure going to miss seeing that man at work, I love him like a brother. He has been a great public servant.  I hope to see some of you there on the 31st!

Last week we talked about OpenDNS and how its has been monitoring my home computers since 2009, keeping us safe from bad websites, spyware, trojans, spoofing, and more, all for free.  Last week I noticed something on the list of things OpenDNS monitors, that I didn’t have check marked, and I didn’t know what it could be. It was something called Typo Squatting.  What is that I thought?  After some googling, its where you type in a website’s URL wrong, hit enter, and instead of going there, you are taken to another website, maybe even a website that means you harm. So I put a check mark in the box, and now I’m protected from typesquatting too. After using it over 3 years now 24/7 I highly recommend OpenDNS and its free!

From This and That newsletter archives of January 16, 1999:

I had an interesting phone call last week from a man in Amarillo, Texas. He owns a badge of a local Deputy Sheriff from years ago by the name of Flip Dillard. Flip Dillard is the name on the badge and he lived in the Wilson, Oklahoma area (western Carter county). Deputy Dillard was appointed by the most famous sheriff of this county, Buck Garrett (1911). The owner of the badge, L.F. Blake, is looking for anyone who may know Flip Dillard, be kin to him, or know relatives of Buck Garrett. Please write or call Mr. Blake if you can be of any help to him. Several weeks ago, a Reader asked if the mural was still on the side of the building at “B” and West Main here in Ardmore. The artist was Pete Foster, and one reader told me Pete travels all over the state placing his work of art on the side of buildings and walls.

Most citizens of Oklahoma have some knowledge, or at least have heard, of the illustrious W.H. Murray a.k.a. Alfalfa Bill Murray. The things that come to mind by many Oklahomans is a recalling of some outlandish or gutsy something he performed when he was Governor of this great state. Most everyone will know that he was Governor of the State of Oklahoma but few will know that he was the 9th Governor, serving from Jan 1931 to Jan 1935. Many people will recall reading that he practically wrote the Constitution of Okla when he served as President of the Constitutional Convention (the Con-Con) when the delegates were meeting to create the laws that would govern this Great State, all before the Territory was approved for Statehood and its ratification and approval by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. Many citizens wont know that he was Speaker of The State House of Representatives from 1907-1908. Later he was elected to, and served as a member of the 63rd & 64th United States Congress.

“…the Cruce property joined the Mt. Washington (school) property on the south…This may be where the shed is located. Dorothy Cruce married A.W. DeMoss. He is dead and I don’t know her status. Could the grandaughter have been a DeMoss offspring? Cruces later owned and lived in the Cruce Apartments across from the Orthodox Baptist Church. Mr.James Cruce (Sheriff for 30 Days) had a dairy earlier on the Bridges property. Lee Cruce, James’ brother, was governor as you know.”

Some mail from this week’s MAILBAG…..“When I taught at the Oklahoma School for The Deaf, and I was girls basket ball coach, one night we were coming home from a game with Atoka, and a mountain lion crossed the road in front of us several were surprised that there were lions this close. It was less than a mile South of Mill Creek. My son and I were deer hunting just south of Sulphur. We heard a terrible scream less than a quarter of a mile West and South from us, and less than fifteen seconds, a reply scream about that far South and East of us. My son looked at me and said, “I think I’m ready to go the house. It was mountain lions communicating with each other.”  -George

“Butch: My parents lived on the Goddard Ranch from about 1948, and continued for over 50 years, well past the 1960’s. I lived there also until 1965, and of course often was back home visiting my parents. The Beatles were never there.”  -Dan Broughton, Norman, OK

“Butch, I believe what you are calling Torture Cave is located on private property west of Dougherty. It is part of the Chapman Ranch. The red circle is the approximate location of the cave.”

“One time four or five us were on a bicycle tour in Kentucky when we rode past a small house by the road; it had signs all around: Psychic, Palm Reader, Knows All-Tells All, Your Future For $5.00. As we pedaled past, the woman sitting in a rocker on the front porch yelled, “Where you folks headed?”  One of the guys yelled back, “Don’t you already know?” Love your reports.”  -Jim Foreman

“She was a fortune teller. She would help men find their lost hunting dogs, or tell the truth about a new love to the lonely. I sat back and observed. People would show up several times a day at $10.00 each. She had a special gift.  Amanda Martha Ferris Kelly 10/04/16 – 02/28/94 was born in Tuttle, Oklahoma. She lived most her life in southern California but lived in the Wilson, Oklahoma area from 1979 to 1994 a few blocks south of Main Street in a red brick house. Most of her clientele were those seeking love and advice, as well as other info and knowledge. Many were from Memorial Hospital employed as nurses. She was a wonderful woman to many. I often wondered if it were the cards explaining one’s fate, or if it was her ability to read a person’s soul. She was never afraid to share what she interpreted good or bad. She is buried in Tuttle, Oklahoma”

01/16/13  Measure would allow Oklahoma cities to ban dog breeds
http://newsok.com/measure-would-allow-oklahoma-cities-to-ban-dog-breeds/article/3746206

“Hello Butch, Seem like I have a hard time keepin a dog in my old age. I have had a dog all my life. I wouldn’t know how to live without a dog. I have had two dogs in the last 6 or 7 years. The first one was Willie. I think you have a pic of him on your website. I had him for almost 6 years. He was a very intelligent dog. But Lacked street sense. In other words when he got outside he was was just dumb. He liked people. He would meet and greet anyone who came to our house. He would bay and try to communicate with any one. We had a ritual At 5 in the a.m. he would go outside and I would fix breakfast for us. We done this for years. And then one Morning he didn’t come back. As you know Butch, we live in a somewhat country environment, even tho we are inside the city limits of Wilson. It was quite a heart rendering tragedy to lose Willie, I vowed never again to get a dog and get attached the way we were. But an old man needs company, and I saw Ben’s pic on the Ardmore Animal Shelter. That same day we were together. I took him to Dr. Tripp in Ringling and he was neutered. He came thru it with flying colors. He was a young pup barely 1 year old. But He was willing to have fun with me and “Let’s get it on!” He was so attentive. He learned house breaking almost immediately. He would come paw at my arm when he needed to go out. He learned the routine real fast. 5 a.m. time to go outside while I fixed our bkfst. He also learned to ride my Scooters. I never taught him this. He just done it by himself. When I changed scooters, he learned to sit on the front. Last Sunday at 11am I let him out to go do his thing. And he never came back. I am devastated to lose another pup so soon! He was a friendly dog. He loved everybody and all strange dogs. All I can say is God thank you for letting me have my puppies for the time I had them.”  -Ken @ Wilson

Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good – Don Williams 1981

Lord, I hope this day is good
I’m feelin’ empty and misunderstood
I should be thankful, Lord, I know I should
But Lord I hope this day is good
