PO Box 2, Ardmore, Oklahoma 73402
Today the Ardmore area got a longover due rain, good slow rain, that soaked in. We got less than 2 inches, so we need a lot more, but we’re thankful to get the rain that came through today.
“Red Everett’s Grocery Store it was located on Hoxbar Route, which is now Sandy Creek Road southeast of Ardmore but still in Carter County. Sandy creek does continue east to the Marshall County line. The store had everything you could imagine, a gas pump, kerosene pump (inside the store) groceries of course, ice cream and candy, a feed room was on the east side of the store and where a few of kids would wait out of the cold weather for the Dickson school bus. On the west side of the store was another connecting building that held all the extra bottles of soda pop. Mr. Everett had a big old white dog named Shep that slept on the front porch and had an egg for breakfast every morning with Mr. Everett.”
Long time Carter County resident, Creede Speake, is on the front cover of Ardmore’s Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation’s 2013 Annual Report. The 10″ by 10″ book is exquisitely put together in full color. The first 25 or so pages are dedicated to employees and others who help make the company a success in 2013 with a full color photo of the employee on the left, and on the right, a brief story of that employee.
Our 8 turkeys come to visit and eat our grapes sometimes twice a day. They are so cute. A couple is on the top rail, and there is also 2 rabbits back behind, and a red bird somewhere in all those leaves. Someone asked me the following:
“Butch did you plant the grapes for the wildlife???”
My answer: NO! And they have claimed squatter’s rights, and I can’t find a judge in this county to do anything about it!

Someone mentioned to me about killing 8 scorpions in their house in two weeks. Yikes! That would scare me to death. For several years we have been using glue boards placed strategically around the house to catch creepy crawlers. They work great and cheap, last a long time. We started buying them by the box, about 40, from amazon.com as they are cheaper when purchased in quantity like that.

A. The schoolhouse was located near the banks of Caddo Creek about 2 miles south Milo, Oklahoma and Highway 53. Here is a map showing the approximate location of the school.
I have ran the Clean module in SlimCleaner several times the past couple weeks and it works fine, and does a great job getting old junk off a computer. My next step, after I’ve done a complete backup image of my hard drive, is to clean the registry using SlimCleaner.
Q. In 1912 it was reported a gold mine was found in Carter County, bigger than California’s or Alaska’s. Where was this gold mine supposedly?
A. January 26, 1912
Farmer says Gold Is Found, No one but himself is wise…. That Carter County has a gold mine that will make it greater than California or Alaska is the opinion of M.W. Clark of Keller, Oklahoma, who says he has found a lead of gold ore that is very rich and extends across the country for several miles. Mr. Clark does not own the land and he wants to form a partnership with some person with sufficient means to purchase the land and will be willing to divide equally the profits of the mine with the person who will furnish the money. If the party desires to buy him outright he will sell for an agreed price and take any person to where the gold is found. He says the ore is rich, that it has been tested and proves to be very rich. He is enthusiastic over his find and believes there is enough money in it to make a hundred men as rich as they would like to be.
Q. Where is the deepest producing oil well in Oklahoma?
A. (answer in next week’s T&T)
From This and That newsletter archives of July 15, 2000:
And I also got a pic of the bell at the old Eskew Ranch at the south edge of Ardmore on Highway 77. This was my second visit to the Eskew Ranch. Jim Eskew was a world famous trick roper. My first time to visit the Eskew Ranch was in May 1977 when I worked on the ambulance. Mr. Eskew had been sick a long time, and it was then I took him to the hospital where he later died at the age of 59. When I looked at that weather beaten bell this week, I thought how it stood now in silence in memory of a man who set records everywhere he went. In WWII he performed for over 2 Million servicemen. One of his major accomplishments in the Army was his performance on the TC-87, a 3 hour physical endurance test. He scored 596 out of a possible 600, a score that has never been matched.
I was talking to one of the auditors a while back that comes to the courthouse from time to time to do audits. She commented that one of the first things she notices when she walks in our courthouse, is how computerized it is, with computers everywhere. She told me some courthouses she goes to are fortunate to have 3 or 4 computers in the entire courthouse. Yes, she is right, our courthouse has come a long way in the area of computerization. In January 1995 we had some offices that only had one computer, others with 2 or 3, and the county barns had none. Many of the employees had to share what computers their office did have in place.
To make a long story short, I happy to say nearly every employee has a computer workstation on their desks with few exceptions. There has probably been 3 or 4 dozen new, state of the art computers installed within the last year. Even all three county barns have modern computers. Not long ago the two secretaries at the commissioners offices received their two new computers, needless to say they are happy!
I had a reader email me a picture of Springer, Oklahoma taken back in 1908. That looks like the old Methodist Church in the background, which still stands today.
Take the number of the month you were born,
multiply by 4,
multiply by 25,
add the day of the month on which you were born,
multiply by 2,
multiply by 50,
add the last two digits of the year in which you were born,
Notice anything funny about your answer?

Q. I received the following email this week. “I am attempting to learn more about the attached the ?New State? ?46? ?OKLA CITY? item. It appears to be a button or lapel pin. Would anyone know anything about the history of the company that produced it and if this company was involved in some kind of lawsuit in the 1920?s or so.” -Lance
A. From my 2004 newsletter archives: “My husband says New State was an ice company in Oklahoma City on NE 23rd street, he can remember purchasing ice blocks there for milk delivery trucks… the number could have something to do with the pounds… do you remember the cardboard signs you put in the window so the ice delivery man would know how much you wanted.” -Carol and Earl Canfield, Meeker, OK.
