When I was a wee lad back in the 1960s my mother would take me to Dr J. Jay Boyd, the “sugar pill” doctor at 127 F Street N.E. here in Ardmore. He was a homeopathic doctor. He had a big gallon bottle of little sugar pills and what looked like about a dozen bottles of different liquid medicines in each one. Each liquid treated a different ailment. People came from miles around for his poison ivy treatment pills. He lived to be 99 years old.

In the late 1960s I was at the fire station on East Main and a couple stopped by who had driven all the way from California. They were in a pickup with a camper on the pickup bed. They asked if they could spend the night one the east side of the fire station, as they were going to Dr. Boyd’s office in the morning to pick up their 6 month supply of “sugar pills”. Firefighters Robert Miller 1934-2017 (left) and John E.E. Willingham 1918-2016 (right) gave them permission to park for the night.
